Size Inclusivity in Fashion: How Social Media Raises Awareness

Have you ever gone out clothes shopping with friends, only to find that the stores don’t have your size?
For plus-sized people, the sizes they need are rarely found in stores. Straight sizes — which can be purchased from any clothing retailer — typically range from 0 to 14. Even when plus sizes are available, they rarely exceed 1X or 4X. Popular clothing retailers like Forever 21 and Old Navy often display straight sizes front and center, while relegating plus sizes to a smaller section of the store (if including them at all).
In this article, we break down the issue of exclusion in fashion, examine its impact on plus-size shoppers, and explore how fashion influencers are using their platforms to promote better size inclusivity in stores.
Are Clothing Retailers Truly Size-Inclusive?
The Reality of Size Inclusivity in Retail
In recent years, retail clothing companies have made growing strides in size inclusivity through ads and commercials. However, a visit to your local mall will reveal that the reality doesn’t always match the marketing.
Removal of Plus Sizes from Stores
Consumers are increasingly noticing retailers like Target condensing their plus-size sections to a few clothing racks or removing them altogether. While retailers may make plus sizes available on their digital storefronts, online shopping eliminates the ability to try on clothes and often incurs additional costs like shipping.
Limited Styles for Plus Sizes
Even when brick-and-mortar stores do carry plus sizes, the offerings are limited. While straight-size clothing comes in a variety of colors and styles, plus sizes will often be restricted to dark colors and less diverse styles.
The Message of Exclusion
By excluding plus-size options, or separating plus sizes from straight sizes, stores are pushing the narrative that smaller sizes are more socially acceptable than plus sizes. Lack of size inclusivity affects the overall shopping experience, causing many shoppers to feel unwelcome and “left out.”
How Social Media is Raising Awareness
The Role of Social Media Influencers
Social media has become a powerful platform for advocating size inclusivity. Influencers are using their creativity and reach to highlight the lack of diversity in fashion and push for change.
Samyra’s TikTok Advocacy
For instance, Samyra’s TikToks offer an honest perspective on her experiences shopping for plus-sized clothing. Her videos take place in popular stores like Forever 21, where she reviews “the options available, what’s stocked in store versus online, how welcoming the overall experience feels, and more.” As of January 2025, she has gained a TikTok audience of over 2 million engaged followers.
How You Can Help Promote Size Inclusivity
